At Northern Bear, we take pride in the ongoing efforts of our subsidiary companies, and today, we’re excited to highlight the important role of Arcas Building Solutions. Based in Gateshead, Arcas has been appointed as the lead contractor for the extensive refurbishment of a grade two-listed building located at the corner of Grainger Street and Monument in Newcastle.
This prestigious project will see the transformation of this landmark into a brand-new flagship branch for Newcastle Building Society (NBS), unlocking areas of the building that have remained inaccessible to the public for decades. Working in partnership with Silverstone Building Consultancy, Arcas Building Solutions will lead the effort to revitalise this historic site, combining respect for its architectural heritage with innovative design to meet modern standards.
Bringing New Life to a Historic Building
Originally constructed in the 1830s, this iconic building has played host to several well-known retail tenants over the years, including names like Boots and French Connection, which vacated the premises in 2023. The refurbishment, led by Arcas Building Solutions, aims not only to restore the building’s historic charm but also to introduce new features that blend tradition with contemporary design elements.
The renovation will breathe new life into this historic structure, converting it into a versatile space that caters to modern needs while maintaining its character. The project includes modern office and event spaces on the upper floors, a new Newcastle Building Society branch on the ground floor, and a lower ground floor dedicated to local charities and community organisations, reinforcing NBS’s commitment to supporting the local area.
Arcas Building Solutions’ Role in the Redevelopment
As the lead contractor, Arcas Building Solutions is charged with delivering the successful transformation of this landmark building while upholding its historic value. Collaborating with Silverstone Building Consultancy, whose Newcastle office will manage the project, Arcas will oversee every phase of the renovation, from meticulous planning to precise execution.
The ambitious refurbishment spans 8,400 sq.ft across five floors, with a significant portion of the space being reintroduced for public use after decades of closure. A key element of this redesign involves relocating the central staircase, which will open up the area to create a more spacious and accessible customer environment, enhancing the overall flow and functionality of the space.
A Bright Future for Grainger Street and Monument
This project represents more than just a physical renovation; it symbolises a commitment to preserving Newcastle’s architectural heritage while adapting to the evolving needs of the community. Arcas Building Solutions is dedicated to delivering the highest standards of quality and innovation, ensuring that the new NBS Monument branch becomes a dynamic hub for both commercial and community-focused activities.
With construction well underway, the transformation of the building will be completed in time for the opening of the Monument branch in 2025. Once finished, this flagship branch will offer a mix of public, commercial, and charitable spaces, breathing new life into the heart of Newcastle’s city centre.
