Heritage restoration continues to play a crucial role in protecting the UK’s architectural and cultural identity. These projects require not only technical skill but also sensitivity and respect for the stories embedded in historic spaces. From churches and listed buildings to centuries-old cemeteries, such work ensures that the past remains a living part of our shared environment. One company helping to uphold this legacy is MGM Construction, which is nearing completion of a major conservation scheme across Newcastle’s historic burial grounds.
MGM Construction Leads £1M+ Heritage Restoration for Newcastle City Council
A significant contract showcasing the specialist expertise of the Northern Bear Plc Group’s subsidiaries is now approaching completion, with MGM Construction successfully delivering the Cemetery Walls Scheme on behalf of Newcastle City Council.
Valued at over £1 million, the two-year programme has been pivotal in safeguarding key heritage sites across the city. It underlines the company’s growing reputation for delivering technically demanding conservation projects with precision, care, and long-term value.
Preserving Heritage for the Future
Awarded in August 2023, the scheme required a meticulous and respectful approach to protect the historical and cultural integrity of several important cemeteries while maintaining safe and accessible spaces for the public. The works span six locations across Newcastle: Heaton Cemetery, Jesmond Old Cemetery, St Nicholas Cemetery, St James Cemetery, West Road Crematorium and Cemetery, and Lemington Cemetery.
The boundary walls at these sites play a vital role in defining their character and ensuring their protection. Addressing structural weaknesses now has helped prevent more costly interventions later, while also mitigating further deterioration caused by water ingress and vegetation growth.
MGM Construction, working alongside trusted subcontractors, carried out extensive restoration and conservation tasks including:
- Vegetation clearance, particularly at Lemington Cemetery
- Masonry restoration and structural repairs
- Railing and gate repairs
- Timber fence and joinery work, including new palisade fencing
Special focus was given to the Grade II listed Jesmond Old Cemetery and the Gothic west entrance of St Nicholas Cemetery, both recognised for their architectural and historical significance.

Delivering Results Across Seven Cemeteries
Now close to completion, the project has seen the restoration of seven cemeteries in total for the Council. Works included thousands of square metres of repointing, substantial rebuilding, stone replacements, and new fencing installations.
At St Nicholas Cemetery, the team undertook the careful dismantling of 160 linear metres of walling, including ten large pillars, all of which were rebuilt to a stable and improved height — a clear demonstration of MGM’s attention to structural detail and heritage integrity.
Managing Complexity with Care
Working within active cemeteries presented unique challenges, requiring thoughtful coordination to avoid disruption to visitors, funerals, and maintenance staff. MGM implemented a series of robust management measures, including designated contractor compounds, phased deliveries, and segregated work zones to maintain public safety and access.
Close collaboration with cemetery staff and Northern Bear’s Health & Safety advisors was integral to the project’s success. Their combined expertise ensured traffic management and safety procedures met the highest standards, reflecting the wider strength of the Northern Bear Group’s collective approach.

A Meaningful Investment in Local Heritage
This £1M+ restoration marks a significant operational and cultural achievement for both MGM Construction and Newcastle City Council. Beyond the immediate structural repairs, the project represents a long-term investment in the city’s heritage, helping preserve the dignity and character of spaces that hold deep historical and emotional meaning.
As the works near completion, MGM’s role in protecting these cemeteries stands as a testament to both its own craftsmanship and the wider Northern Bear Group’s shared commitment to quality, collaboration, and the enduring value of heritage in the modern built environment.
