Northern Bear’s 10th Charity Golf Day Tees Up Support for St Oswald’s Hospice

On Wednesday 29th May, Northern Bear PLC proudly hosted its 10th Annual Charity Golf Day at the scenic Ramside Hall Golf Club. What began as a modest fundraiser has become a much-anticipated event, uniting businesses, colleagues, and friends from across the North East in support of a cause close to our hearts: St Oswald’s Hospice

A Decade of Giving Back

This year marked a meaningful milestone in Northern Bear’s decade-long commitment to St Oswald’s — a local charity providing specialist care to children, young adults, and adults living with life-limiting conditions. Since our first fundraiser in 2016, our relationship with the hospice has grown into a genuine partnership grounded in shared values and community spirit.

Our connection with St Oswald’s started thanks to Howard Gold, who was a Director at the time and is now Northern Bear PLC’s Lifetime President, a title that reflects just how much he’s done for the company over the years. It was through Howard’s friendship with St Oswald’s then Chief Executive, James Ellam, that our partnership with the hospice began. That first gesture of support, a raffle packed with over 40 prizes, raised an amazing £10,000, helping to fund around 400 hours of specialist nursing care.

A Rainy Day, But Spirits Stayed Bright

Despite the drizzle, the energy and enthusiasm on the course this year was palpable! Guests were welcomed with breakfast sandwiches and an opportunity to network before heading out for a shotgun start on Ramside’s beautiful course. The halfway house provided some welcome refreshments, and a hearty selection of North East pies kept players fuelled throughout the round.

As always, the day was about more than just golf. It was a celebration of community, care, and the shared belief that businesses can, and should be a force for good.

An Evening of Stories and Support

After the tournament, guests came together for dinner, entertainment, a prize auction, and the announcement of the day’s winners. The most powerful moment came from Jill and Megan, mothers of Lucy and Sophia, who spoke movingly about how St Oswald’s Children and Young Adults Service has transformed their families’ lives.

Their stories were a heartfelt reminder of why we support this incredible organisation—and why it’s so important for businesses like ours to keep playing their part.

A Lasting Partnership

Sonia Graham, Corporate Fundraising Manager at St Oswald’s Hospice, summed up the event perfectly:

“We’re delighted that the Northern Bear Golf Day was a huge success and that the event itself was enjoyed by so many people. Congratulations to the winning teams, and thank you to everyone who took part.”

Northern Bear is proud to be part of the St Oswald’s Hospice family. Through events like this, we aim not only to raise funds but to build lasting connections between our staff and the hospice. As a group of ten businesses rooted in the North East, we’re united in our commitment to community, care, and corporate responsibility.

Looking Ahead

This year’s event raised an incredible £20,000, adding to a total of £145,000 raised over the past decade. Once again, the energy, generosity, and goodwill on display made it a truly meaningful contribution. To everyone who took part—on the course, at dinner, or behind the scenes—thank you. Here’s to ten years of golf, giving, and making a difference. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings.
