Delivering Technical Excellence in University Construction
Six months ago, Arcas was awarded the contract for a major refurbishment project at Northumbria University’s Nano Labs. This ambitious scheme is focused on upgrading the Fourth Floor of Block E, reinforcing the University’s position at the forefront of scientific research and innovation.
The project is designed to enhance research infrastructure and laboratory facilities, creating a modern environment that supports cutting-edge scientific discovery. Key areas of focus include both external and internal works:
External Works
- Construction of a new staircase to provide safe rooftop access
- Installation of a new rooftop plant, including enclosures, steelworks, and supporting structures
- Roof modifications and selective demolition to accommodate new equipment
- Use of cranes and external lifts for construction materials and installations
Internal Works
- Structural modifications, including concrete slab repairs and core drilling
- Upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and drainage systems
- Installation of internal partitions, doors, and fire-rated glazing
- Specialist lab fittings, flooring, finishes, and signage
Progress to Date
Since winning the contract, Arcas has achieved several key milestones:
- Completion of mechanical and electrical 1st fix works, with services routed according to programme and design
- Installation of roof enclosures and membranes, ensuring the building is fully weathertight
- Ongoing installation of specialist lab fittings, gas pipework, and fire-stopping measures
- Completion of steelwork design for the new staircase, a critical component of the building’s vertical circulation
These achievements mark an exciting stage in the project, as the laboratory begins to take shape both internally and externally.
